Chapter 16 Memorial

“Sir,” said Goliath, gently shaking Rick awake.

“What is it?” Rick felt like he had just fallen asleep.

“We are a few minutes away from the final jump to Anteagen. I thought I would get you up so you could get yourself together for your meeting with Hobbs.”

This put Rick on alert. “How long have I been asleep?” He was trying to make sense of it all, his mind still in a fog.

“About nine hours.”

“Nine hours!” Rick jumped out of the bunk. “I wanted to go over my notes. I... I...”

“Rick!” shouted Goliath. “Calm down.” The shock of Goliath yelling at Rick stopped him in his tracks. “You needed sleep. The more sleep you get, the clearer you think. So, stop worrying about it.”

Rick realized that Goliath was telling him the truth. “Yeah, but I didn’t want to see Dad unprepared.”

“I understand that, but let me ask you this. Do you ever use the notes you make on the shuttle?”

Rick paused to think about that. “No, I guess I really don’t.”

“That’s what I thought. You were better off getting more sleep than worrying about something you couldn’t control. So, let me make the jump. I’ll contact Slattery, and you can go see Dad.”

Rick smiled and said, “When did you become so fisty?”

“After our last conversation, I figured it was time to take down some weaknesses.”

“Don’t you think you need my permission?”

“You gave your permission when you signed the contract,” said Goliath with a chuckle.

“Yeah, I bet you say that to all the soldiers?” they laughed.

Goliath got behind the controls. “Can we go now?”

“Yeah, go ahead.”

Goliath jumped and immediately contacted Tim. “Good, you’re here. Goliath, get him down to the planet as fast as possible.”

“Wait! What is going on?” said Rick

“Goliath, just do it. Rick, I’ll talk to you on the ground. Slattery out.”

“Well, strap in,” said Goliath as he put the ship into a dive. Rick barely had enough time to get buckled up before the planet’s gravity took hold of the shuttle.

Rick was getting used to the thrill of the ride. Still, he wondered what was so important that it was necessary.

Once they were on the ground, Tim didn’t even wait for Goliath to open the hatch. He opened it and stuck his head in. “Come on!”

“What’s the rush?” Rick followed without knowing what the panic was about.

Once they were in the lift, Tim said, “We have to get you ready for the memorial service.”

“Tim! Speak in whole sentences. What memorial service?”

Tim led Rick to the conference room. He opened the door and said, “The one for Admiral Hornsby.” Then pushed Rick into the room and shut the door.

“Good afternoon, Sir.” Benson was in the conference room. “It’s good to see you, but we must hurry.” Benson laid out one of Rick’s more excellent business suits on the table. “Please strip, Sir.”

As Rick disrobed, he asked, “Do you know what this is all about?”

Benson continued to help Rick get dressed. “This is about Admiral Hornsby’s memorial service. You will be speaking, and it starts in half an hour.
